Shopping for a pillow gets confusing fast. The fills are completely different from one another — memory foam, polyethylene pipe, layered foam — and prices run from around ¥5,000 to nearly ¥30,000. But one thing people tend to regret about a pillow is not the material but the height. And the right height for you is honestly not something you can work out before you buy, even after lying on one in a shop for a few minutes. So this comparison uses two axes instead: can you change the height after you own it, and how much of the pillow can you actually wash. All four adjust — but they adjust in completely different ways.
Our Picks — The Right One for You

Nishikawa エアー4D AI5010
- Pattern no.AI5010
Up to 3 cm in 1 cm steps, with the 2 cm sheet split in four. Top height-adjustment score of the four (4), and 63 cm wide. Only the cover is washable (per a retail page). Washability scores 1 point because the official page does not mention washing.

Nishikawa 肩楽寝
- IncludedRefill pipe supplied
The pillow body can be washed at home (maker). Top washability score of the four (4). Height adjusts at two places, behind the head and at the neck. At 50 cm it is the narrowest of the four. #1 on the Spec Score (3.10).
Upsides and Downsides of Replacing Your Pillow
What tends to make people glad they switched, and what to check before you order.
Upsides
- Cheaper than a mattress, and it still changes your sleeping posture — so getting it wrong costs little
- An adjustable pillow can be re-set later, when the season changes or a new mattress sinks differently
- A washable pillow can be cleaned before sweat and odour build up in it
Downsides
- The right height depends on your build and how far your mattress sinks, so other people's "too high" or "too low" impressions may not transfer to you
- Among these four, only the Kata-Rakune can have the pillow body washed; for the other three only the cover can (for the AiR 4D, per a retail page)
- On some pillows lowering the height is just a matter of removing fill, but raising it needs the supplied refill pack (Kata-Rakune) or sheets (AiR 4D)
How to Choose a Pillow: 6 Points
Here are 6 points to check before you buy. The figures in the diagrams come from the official and retail-page specs of the products in this article.
Know How the Height Is Adjusted
Height is one of the things people tend to regret about a pillow, and you cannot know the right height before you buy. So look at whether you can change it afterwards, and how.

How Much Can Be Washed
A pillow takes sweat every night. Check whether only the cover washes or the pillow body does too. Here we count only what the maker states can be washed. For the AiR 4D only a retail page mentions washing, so it gets 1 point here.

Does It Suit Your Sleeping Position
The height you need changes between back, side and front sleeping. See whether the maker states support for a position, or how to set it up.

Size (Room to Turn Over)
Width gives a rough idea of whether your head stays on the pillow when you turn over. For a larger pillow, also check the space and the pillowcase size.

Related pickEmma Sleep ピロー プレミアム / Nishikawa エアー4D AI5010(Size 5/5)
Measures Against Heat and Stuffiness
The head traps heat. Look for breathable fill or structure, a layer that carries off heat, and a breathable cover or sides.

Pairing With Your Mattress
How a pillow's height feels depends not only on its own number but also on how it pairs with your mattress (the points below are general guides and vary from person to person). If you are considering replacing both, see Mattress Comparison: Choosing by Sleep Feel and Durability as well.

The Kata-Rakune, with its polyethylene pipe fill, is the one that can be laundered at home. For the three foam pillows, the only part the makers (or, for the AiR 4D, a retail page) state is washable is the cover.
The GOKUMIN moves from 4cm to 11cm — the widest span in the makers' figures, so you can try both ends.
Only the AiR 4D Pillow splits into four sections — neck side, back-of-head side and both sides — that adjust separately (the Kata-Rakune adjusts at two places, behind the head and at the neck).
Who This Suits, and Who Should Look Elsewhere
Height-adjustable pillows as a category tend to suit the following people.
A good fit if you
- Have replaced pillow after pillow without ever finding the right height
- Have just changed mattress and found your pillow no longer works
- Sweat at night and care whether the pillow can be washed
Consider other options if you
- Are happy with the height and feel of the pillow you have
- Are set on a particular fill, such as buckwheat husk or beads
- Have ongoing neck or shoulder pain in the morning and are not sure the pillow is the cause — seeing a doctor first is the more reliable route
What Tends to Catch People Out After Buying, and What to Do
What tends to happen with any pillow is that it turns out higher or lower than expected. That is less a fault of the product than a reflection of the fact that the right height shifts with your build and how far your mattress sinks — which is why someone else's impression does not transfer to you. It is also why this comparison weighs how far the height can be changed later rather than the height itself. In general, a new foam pillow is said to hold a smell when first opened; if so, follow the care label and air it somewhere well ventilated. Another point that is easy to miss until after purchase is that the cover washes but the pillow does not. The washability table above and each product page follow each maker's official wording (for the AiR 4D alone, where the maker says nothing about washing, a retail page, so it gets 1 point); where a maker does not say something is washable, we have not said it either.
Which to Pick, by Situation
If you want both a washable pillow and fine height control, the Nishikawa Kata-Rakune Health Pillow. If you want to find your height first without spending much, the GOKUMIN Premium Memory Foam Pillow. If you would rather decide by sleeping position, or want the longest warranty, the Emma Pillow Premium. If you need to pad the neck or one side on its own, the Nishikawa AiR 4D Pillow.
What to Do First After It Arrives
When it arrives, start by reading the care label and the included instructions. For a height-adjustable pillow, it is generally said to be easier to find the right position by starting low and adjusting a little at a time (the GOKUMIN is chosen from four fixed settings rather than built up). As a general guide, look for a height where, lying on your back, there is no awkward gap behind your neck and your chin does not tilt upward. Then roll onto your side — if your shoulder compresses and your head drops, add height where the pillow allows it. Give each setting a few nights before judging it, rather than deciding after one (how it feels varies from person to person). If you bought a washable pillow, read the care label first and note what can be washed and how to dry it. For how to dry fill such as pipe, follow the product's care label.
How the Spec Score Is Calculated
Each criterion is scored from 1 to 5, and the overall score is the weighted average. We use the manufacturer's official figures; where the official site could not be read, we fill in from Amazon, Rakuten Ichiba, Kakaku.com and similar retail or comparison pages (only pages that match the exact model number). A criterion with no published figure is left out and the average is taken over the rest (for care and features, only items that are actually listed earn points).
| Height adjustment (30% weight) | Ease of adjusting height (starts at 1 point, +1 for each that applies) (1) height can be changed section by section (2) adjustment range of 3 cm or more (from the maker's figures) (3) range of 6 cm or more (4) adjusted by adding or removing fill, sheets or layers |
|---|---|
| Washability (25% weight) | What can be washed (starts at 1 point, +1 for each stated) (1) the cover can be washed (2) the pillow body can be washed (3) a part can go in a washing machine |
| Sleeping position (15% weight) | Support for sleeping positions (starts at 1 point, +1 per position stated) Back / side / front (where the maker states support or how to set it up) |
| Heat and stuffiness (15% weight) | Measures against stuffiness and heat (starts at 1 point, +1 per measure stated) Breathable fill or structure / a layer that carries off heat or limits heat build-up / a breathable cover or sides |
| Size (15% weight) | Pillow width (a guide to ease of turning over) 63 cm or more = 5 / 58+ = 4 / 53+ = 3 / 48+ = 2 / below = 1 |
Summary
This comparison uses published specs, not how the pillows felt to sleep on. Since the right height is hard to know before you buy, weigh whether it can be changed afterwards and how much can be washed, then pick by your sleeping position and budget.
