About the scoresThe scores are calculated mechanically by applying the criteria table at the end of the page to figures published on the manufacturers' official pages and manuals (and on retail or comparison pages where an official figure was not available). We call it the "Spec Score".

Dish drying racks come in many shapes, from freestanding baskets to ones that spread over the sink and tension-mounted multi-tier racks, and how water drains and how much room they take varies by product. Even some freestanding models can send water straight into the sink. Here we compare four products on five items (drainage, footprint, load and heat, storage extras, and material), using only specs published on official and retail pages.

Here are 6 points to check before you buy. The figures in the diagrams come from the official and retail-page specs of the products in this article.

Decide Between Freestanding and Over-the-Sink

How you place a rack changes how water is handled and how much room it needs. First decide whether it goes on the counter or over the sink.

Check How the Water Flows

Upkeep depends on whether water collects. We look at three things.

Care Notes

These care points come from the sources. The Pearl Metal HC-513 has an epoxy-coated steel basket, and its retail page says not to use it in a dishwasher because it can deform. The Latuna Roll-Up Rack can go in a dishwasher, though it may not fit in some dishwashers. In general, wiping off excess water after use helps any material last longer. For over-the-sink types, measuring the inside of your sink before buying makes it easier to judge whether it will fit.

First Steps After You Buy

After setup, try actually washing dishes and note where water tends to collect; that makes it easier to adjust the placement or angle. For over-the-sink types, it is worth checking once after installation that the fit is right and there is no wobbling. If water does collect, emptying it soon after you finish washing helps keep limescale and mold from building up.

How the Spec Score Is Calculated

Each criterion is scored from 1 to 5, and the overall score is the weighted average. We use the manufacturer's official figures; where the official site could not be read, we fill in from Amazon, Rakuten Ichiba, Kakaku.com and similar retail or comparison pages (only pages that match the exact model number). A criterion with no published figure is left out and the average is taken over the rest (for care and features, only items that are actually listed earn points).

Drainage (25% weight)Drainage (starts at 1 point, +1 for each that applies)
(1) stated to drain straight into the sink (2) drain direction or nozzle is adjustable (3) a water tray is included
Footprint (20% weight)Width x depth (area it covers; smaller is easier to place)
800 cm2 or less = 5 / 1000 = 4 / 1200 = 3 / 1500 = 2 / above = 1
Load and heat (15% weight)Load and heat (starts at 1 point, +1 for each that applies). Products that state no load capacity are left out of this item
(1) load capacity 5 kg or more (2) load capacity 10 kg or more (3) heat resistance 150 C or more
Storage and handiness (20% weight)Extras (starts at 1 point, +1 per listed item, max 5)
Divider or pocket for small items / shelf or tiers / rolls or folds for storage / adjustable width or height / stopper for soaking
Material and care (20% weight)Material and care (starts at 1 point, +1 for each that applies)
(1) body in a rust-resistant material such as stainless steel, resin or silicone (steel is not included) (2) stated to be dishwasher-safe

Summary

This comparison uses published specs, not hands-on impressions. Decide where it will go (counter or over the sink) and what you want to put on it (heavy pots or a lot of dishes), then choose.
